Perfect for fans of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, this intriguing urban fantasy follows the story of Kat Chanter, who discovers that the world she knows is controlled by ancient creatures who feed on blood. And she might just be one of them ...

Kat can run a marathon without breaking a sweat. Catch anything you throw at her. Differentiate blood types by smell alone. And she's spent years hiding the fact. But secrets from the past have a way of slipping out when least expected, and a simple blood test is enough to turn her quiet life in the shadow of the Appalachian Mountains upside down forever.

Kat's been craving raw meat. When she visits a psychic she's told her life is about to change forever. Kat isn't so sure change is a part of her plan, but when a fabulous job offer to work for a research organization comes her way, she's tempted to say yes and make the move to New York. It just might be her chance to find out if there are others in the world like her ...

Will her dream job bring answers to her questions or will it lead her into more trouble than she could ever imagine?

Dark Child The Awakening Episode 1 edition by Adina West Literature Fiction eBooks

The storyline of Dark Child is very linear and reads in places like an outline barely padded with some word flesh. Event A must occur such that Event B can occur such that Event C can occur... it was tiresome to read at times. Some digressions would have been welcome, particularly for character development and specifically because the heroine, Kat, is the only rounded out character in the entire 20,000 words.

The writing is relatively pedestrian and non-evocative. Ms. West tells us the story instead of showing us the story. There is some potential to this tale, but at US$7.00 for the remaining four parts, I won't be coming along for the ride. I'm unclear as to why the publisher thought that breaking this novel up into five parts was a good idea.

Finally, I cannot understand why an Australian writer would choose to set her book in the United States and not make every effort to remove the Britishisms from the story--particularly when backed by a large publisher. Do the publishers not care about issues such as these? The following are spellings, words, and phrases that are not used in the US, along with their US counterparts (in parentheses):

the bin (the trash)
flavours (flavors)
wooly-headed (fuzzy-headed)
stay back late (stay after late)
bitumen (asphalt)
secondment (reassignment)
pregnant to (pregnant by)
silk floss (no US counterpart)
packet of bread (loaf of bread)
'cos ('cause)
a hiding (tanned his hide)
organise (organize)
flat (apartment)

I wish the author the best of luck, and I suggest she demand a better editor for her next book.

Note I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Rating 3/5 stars
Series status First of five episodes forming a stand-alone novel
Review
* Characters 3/5 - the characters were average; none fell completely flat but likewise none really stood out as unique or interesting. Mediocre but not bad.
* Premise 4/5 - an interesting take on vampires. Not extremely original but neither overly cliché, standard for a paranormal work dealing with mythological creatures. Kept a sufficient amount of original mythology with a few creative new ideas.
* Plot 4/5 - as it's an episode forming part of a novel (46 pages in my .pdf file copy) the plot does not undergo huge development. This episode consists mainly of introduction, introducing characters with foreshadowing regarding mystical danger in later episodes.
* Pacing 4/5 - again, as the beginning section of a larger work it is mainly introduction, but it holds interest well.
* Dialogue 3/5 - nothing glaringly unrealistic but it never caught at my interest; it was there to support not shine and did an adequate job.
* Imagery 3/5 - again, average, some imagery, enough to place scenery and scenes but no standout descriptions or other imagery.
* World building 4/5 - In this first episode there is mainly foreshadowing of the paranormal world introduced in later episodes. The real-world setting is fairly detailed and believable.
* Voice 4/5 - written from the third person point of view in past tense. Mainly from the perspective of Kat, the main protagonist, with some scenes showing other characters to lend foreshadowing. Kat's voice is believable, the other character, Amarok, has very well portrayed emotions. Not overtly noticeable voice, more action based descriptions.
* Romance
* Amount none
* Explicit scenes none
* Love triangle none
* Notes In the first episode there is no romance but from what I've read there promises to be romance in later episodes.

Final notes This book is, overall, not bad. It is well written and well paced and I had no trouble with reading it in one sitting. However there is something lacking, a certain intensity that would make it great rather than merely okay.

This review and others can be found on my blog [...]
A book jamb packed in its short length with intrigue, suspense and drama. Ms West’s ability to put so much in such a short “episode” is a skill I have found not many authors are able to do, and being her first book, kudos to her. Never before have I read “part” of a book and not felt cheated but left satisfied at the end of the episode, yet wanting more at the same time

I crave the next chapter to see what/who Kat is and her connection with the werewolf brothers of Amarock & Anton and their clan. A quality piece of work that I personally plan to find out by reading “Episode 2”

Kat is a pathology technician able to differentiate blood types, a person’s age and race based on smell. She begins to crave and consume raw meat with her dreams becoming more vivid in their weirdness and realistic state.

Kat’s friend convinces her to see a psychic who sees Kat for who she is but only reveals that her future will be changed forever and her love life being filled with obstacles and desire. She even calls her a “dark child” and gives her a book that details “dark child” events dating back to the 1600’s

She understands she is different but not knowing what is wrong with all the weird occurrences to her she takes a blood test, which gives her more questions than answers. What is discovered in her blood sample is that there is a platelet that accelerates healing

The opportunity arises to go work at the head office in New York to further investigate what she discovered in her blood sample that all believe was from an unknown person, but will this bring her the answer she needs or lead her into a strange world she is yet to experience?

Entangled into this story are Amarok and Anton, two werewolf brothers and their clan. Amarok was instructed to ensure the human girl is protected at all cost. Amarok has been shifting to befriend her at her parent’s home and keep an eye in her, now that she is going to New York one must follow

If you loved this book at much as I did I am sure the constant page turning of wanting to know more will lead you to purchase the rest
