This looked like it had been a bestseller so I thought I'd try it. Although it was easy enough to read and had no bad grammar or typos, the style is very "flat" and reads more like stage directions than a novel. The author does more "telling" than "showing" if you know what that means. None of the characters are likeable or sympathetic, so the only suspense is to find out "who done it" -- and, again, I didn't care much, beyond mild curiosity. Also, there seemed to be a loose plot thread at the end, that was never explained. A key piece of evidence just seems to go away and the police ignore an obvious witness/suspect. There is also a final twist that the author must have thought would be shocking, but it seems like she had no other idea for how to end the story. If you want a quick read without deep emotional depth or artistic style, you might like it.Tags : Amazon.com: The Couple Next Door (9780735221086): Shari Lapena: Books,Shari Lapena,The Couple Next Door,Pamela Dorman Books,0735221081,Contemporary Women,Thrillers - Crime,Detective and mystery fiction,Domestic fiction,FICTION Contemporary Women,Family secrets,Family secrets;Fiction.,Married people,Married people;Fiction.,Neighbors,Neighbors;Fiction.,Psychological fiction,Spouses,Thrillers (Fiction),Canada,ENGLISH CANADIAN NOVEL AND SHORT STORY,FICTION Literary,FICTION Thrillers Crime,FICTION Women,Fiction,Fiction-Thriller,FictionLiterary,FictionWomen,GENERAL,General Adult,MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE FICTION,MysterySuspense,Neighbors,Neighbors;Fiction.,Psychological fiction,Spouses,Thrillers (Fiction),Thrillers - Crime,United States, bestseller books 2017;thriller novels;best sellers list new york times 2018;books best sellers;mothers day books;mothers day ideas;mothers day;mothers day gifts;literary fiction;new york times bestsellers;best sellers 2017;best selling books 2017;best books;psychological thrillers books;thrillers;best books of 2017;domestic suspense;suspense;fiction;parenting;domestic thriller;thriller;mystery;thriller books;crime;gifts for women;fiction books;gifts for her;women;women gifts;literature, domestic suspense; suspense; fiction; family; neighbors; baby; parents; parenting; relationship; domestic thriller; thriller; kidnap; murder; mystery; detective; couple; deception; crime; thrillers; thriller books; best books of 2017; mothers day books; mothers day ideas; mothers day; mothers day gifts; books best sellers; literary fiction; new york times bestsellers; best sellers 2017; best selling books 2017; best books; psychological thrillers books; gifts for women; fiction books; gifts for her; women; women gifts; literature,FICTION Literary,FICTION Thrillers Crime,FICTION Women,FictionLiterary,FictionWomen,English Canadian Novel And Short Story,Mystery And Suspense Fiction,Fiction,MysterySuspense
The Couple Next Door Shari Lapena Books Reviews
Oh my goodness, this book just blew me away! Just when I thought I'd worked it all out nicely - BAM - all change!
So, with their babysitter cancelling on them, Anne and Marco leave their baby, Cora, at home whilst they "pop" next door for a dinner party. It'll be fine - they have the baby monitor with them and they go to check on her every half hour and they're only next door. What can possibly go wrong?
Quite simply, they arrive home to find the front door open and the baby gone. Anne goes to pieces, Marco freezes, Anne recovers and the police are called. It is then up to Detective Rasbach to try and piece together what actually happened that night. Did the parents cover up, is one or both of them responsible, is it a third party and if so, was it an opportunistic crime or meticulously planned. With most of the suspects being inconsistent with their stories will Rasbach be able to cut through the noise, work out truth from lies, and bring the case to a close?
I loved this book. It grabbed my attention from the very first page, held on tight and wouldn't let me go until the very last. I was completely enthralled by all the twists and turns, secrets and lies and some delicious family dynamics specifically between Marco and his in-laws.
Characters were especially well defined and thus easy to connect to / emote with although, truth be told, apart from Rasbach, I didn't really like any of them! Plotting was excellent and very well executed. As with most books of this genre, it gets a bit convoluted, but it was easy to follow, made sense and so I never got lost.
Pacing was also excellent throughout. The action was high octane most of the way through but there were calmer moments throughout which I was grateful for as they gave me chance to catch my breath before starting off again.
I believe that this is a new genre for this author. If this is the quality for her first effort, I really can't wait to see what she serves up next time.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I hate books like this no redeeming characters, surprising twists that aren’t really surprising at all, and dull, unimaginative prose. This just isn’t a good book.
I read a lot of books, and really have trouble finding fiction that isn't the same old detective murder stories. I thought this was a great story with a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. It would be hard to talk about the book without giving some of the plot away, but it kept me reading, and was truly hard to put down. I usually read from 11 pm until about 1 am, then go to bed. I ended up staying up until about 2 am or later each night trying to find out what was going to happen next. I thought the book was very well written and easy to read. As soon as I finished it, I found another Shari Lapena book to start.
There were many good things in this novel; it was suspenseful, fast-paced and slightly unpredicable at times. The story and plot kept me engaged.
The writing was mediocre. I found myself becoming frustrated with the "third person" style narrative. When the narration is something the reader repeatedly thinks about, it's probably not a good thing. Narration is something that shouldn't be noticed, but the way this book was written, I noticed it a LOT.
There was not one likeable character, not one. It's hard to get excited about a book when you really don't care what happens to the characters. As for the plot, it wasn't anything new - quite predicable.
Once everything comes together, the story becomes a bit nonsensical. There is no way the dad would get off scot-free. There are also several characters introduced that never get developed (the husband of the neighbor is one) as well as side stories that never get resolved. There are several loose ends, and that drives me nuts.
I've not read anything by this author previously, and I probably wouldn't read another of her books. With that said, the book was good enough to be worth the time.
Marco and Anne are invited to a dinner party at the home of their next door neighbors Cynthia and Graham. They get a baby sitter for their baby daughter Cora. The sitter on the day of the dinner party cancels at the last minute. Anne really did not want to go to the party so she tell Marco that she will stay home with baby Cora. Marco somehow convinces her that they can both still go to the dinner party. All they have to do is every half hour one of them will go home and check on Cora, and they will also take the baby monitor.
They stay later than Anne wanted to and when she goes to check on baby Cora the crib is empty. The police immediately suspect that one or both of them are involved in the disappearance of Cora. As they investigated they soon discover that both of them have secrets that they are not telling each other. Each time that I thought that I had figure out who took baby Cora I was wrong. Every chapter of this book brought more twists and turns. That kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is not to be missed
