I'm not sure where all the 5* reviews are coming from - I've been a fan of the series for years so when I was looking for something to read on my train commute I grabbed this - maybe it is just that the pun idea is aging, but I really felt this is not a significant addition to the series - there are some good plot hooks in there but I felt as though the parts with meat got glossed over in order to get to the next gratuitous, reader-submitted pun. While I appreciate the willingnesss to build in the reader input, for me it goes over the top when it is so incidental (literally, the equivalent of watching stupid puns with no relevance to the story out the window of a bus.) It seemed like the approach was more build-up & stupid pun with a short punchline for the actual story. And the moons of Ida just weren't a concept that needed to be brought into the series, nor was making Ida the long-lost sister of a major (interesting) character (that wasn't news in this book but it continues to irritate)I won't repeat the story as others have done that. If you are a fan of the series, it is ok, but it wouldn't be at all interesting if you don't know the series and haven't read the recent books.
So, pleasant escapism but frustrating in that there was a good story buried in there that just didn't come out.

I really like how puns are used by the Author, "Piers Anthony". I love this series so much, I have purchased all the books of this series, as I have of, "Incarnations of Immortality". The Incarnations of Immortality" is the first book of that series, as of "Bearing an hourglass", "With a tangled skein", "Wielding a red sword", "Being a green mother. If you are into fantasy, and reading of literal puns, you should love this book.
I own every one of the Xamth novels ever published in paperback, which I believe now comes to 34 books, and I've read all but the latest few more than once. "Knot Gneiss" is up to the original Xanth standards--how Piers manages to keep coming up with new ideas I'll never know, but I guess the puns readers submit are a help. I'm an author myself, so I know what kind of headaches one can encounter when trying to come up with original ideas. One thing I noticed is that Piers is including a few more adult scenes in his latest novels. That's good, especially for those of us who are about the same age as the author and enjoy books not specifically written for kids. My recommendation for those of you who have the entire series reserve a long slot of time and read the series from beginning to end. You'll enjoy it as one enormous novel.
Life so many of the novels in this entertaining series it goes nowhere fast but it does get there after a truckload of puns have been dumped on you. Wanda and Jumper were the main characters in the prior novel so it would appear that their story was just not done. Like all pretty much all the novels this was a team effort and our stars could not have succeeded without a little help from past characters. Princess IDA finally meets her match. There is nothing particularly memorable about this story but it fits the series and is pretty much a standalone story. I felt it was worth my time.
If you've followed the Xanth storyline, you already know what to expect. A fun, amusing, pun filled world with maybe an original surprise or two.
It is not "great" writing, destined to be a literary classic. But it was meant as a fun read to fill a rainy day or evening and does that extremely well.
I love the Xanth series of books but was a little disappointed in this one as it did not really flow as well for me as some of the others. I am currently reading Well tempered Clavicle which is much more interesting than I found Knot Gneiss. This series has been going on for years, I bought the first book back in the 80's, and perhaps with time it has changed more with puns than what I remember the first books to have. Although puns are part of the series this book seemed to have more than enough and the story line was not as well conceived as some of Anthony's others. However, it was still a good read if you have an hour or so to spare for light reading. Anthony is a very good author and I imagine that working on a never ending series can be difficult but since his writing is very good and I have read other books by him as well I would still read him and not judge his worth by this book.
