In Her Shoes Jennifer Weiner Books
I loved the movie, and when I read the book, I loved it too. Interesting to note how different the movie and book are, not just in terms of plot but also in terms of character. The two sisters are both deeply flawed women in a dysfunctional, co-dependent relationship, and ironically it is only when they become estranged that they each realize their full potential and self-worth, and the depth of their love for one another. Had Rose continued to put up with and enable her sister's destructive behaviour, they each would've ended up unhappy and alone. Weiner treats her characters with sensitivity and compassion, and her writing is engaging and makes you want to read the book to the end in one sitting.Tags : Amazon.com: In Her Shoes (9780743495660): Jennifer Weiner: Books,Jennifer Weiner,In Her Shoes,Pocket Books,0743495667,Fiction Humorous General,General & Literary Fiction,Modern & contemporary fiction,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945),Modern fiction,Fiction
In Her Shoes Jennifer Weiner Books Reviews
I think this one rare situation where the movie was better than the book - the book still captures the style that I like about Jennifer Weiner but it isn't as absorbing as 'Good in Bed' and i think the movie really took its strengths and reduced the weaknesses while still delivering the same message (good job!). That said, if you like this author then this is still a good read, but tend to agree with other reviewers that Maggie is more of a horrible person that could be tolerated plus there were parts of story that could have been missed ie meeting up with the characters from 'Good in Bed' as that didn't go anywhere.
So 3 stars as my litmus test is do i want to reread it straight away, do i keep thinking about it afterwards? (even for chick lit) at this point i would say it'll be a while before i feel like reading it again, compared to 'Good in Bed' and others.
I was rather bored with this book. I couldn’t get into it at all. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt and stopped reading it 3/4 of the way through.
I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed the character development. At first I didn’t like Maggie and wanted to stop reading the book. But as the story continued the changes in her made me like her. Great story Sisters !!
I was not sufficiently impressed with Good in Bed, but after seeing the previews for the movie based on this book, I thought it looked interesting, as my sisters and I are all very different from each other...this book was a fast read and I definitely found the subject matter more interesting than Good in Bed, as it forced Jennifer Weiner to see life through the eyes of two very different women; however, it was still a little too saccharine for me. OF COURSE Rose would find the love of her life and marry him in the end, and OF COURSE she would forgive her impetuous younger sister for "stealing" her beau from the beginning of the novel. This is real life, folks...I can't imagine my sisters doing such a thing to me, but I know that if they did, no little-known grandmother or handmade wedding dress could make things okay again.
I loved this book. And as i always have to do before i review - i read some of the 'bad' reviews. People - this is fiction. Everything in fiction isnt supposed to be believable - hence the title FICTION. Anyhow, i thought it was entertaining, well-written, a really good story, good character development (the things the people complained about not being able to figure out as to how the characters made changes...it was all explained if you read the whole book!), and a good feeling at the end as far as NOT wanting it to end - and 'learning' something from the story. I really didnt want to put the book down, becuz i was so curious as to what was going to happen to the characters. It's not a PERFECT book - but not many are. It's very good, however.
Jennifer Weiner is a magnificent writer. Her prose is so clean and evocative you don't notice it - you are totally engrossed in the story. Her real strength is a deep understanding of how women work and the nature of their relationships. This book particularly resonated with me because of the tensions of being a sister, having different advantages/strengths, and balancing competition/hate with overwhelming love and shared memories. She also touches on themes that are very timely, and does so with realism and accuracy (learning disabilities, music). Although there were aspects of this story that were heart-breaking, she interwove a very healthy dose of humor. And I hope she keeps fighting the good fight to get literature like this recognized as more than books-for-girls.
This book & I have a long history, well not so long anyway now... I remember searching for a new book to read on the internet one day & came across a book site which reviewed chick lit. Now, being an ignorant person that I was (& am still) I had no idea what chick lit was exactly. Soon, I learned that it included `Bridget Jones's Diary' amongst other pastel covered books with shoes & other such things that I generally do not care about. However, I wasn't cynical about it despite the fact that I couldn't relate to the genre's heroines so I decided to read `In Her Shoes'. I ended up enjoying the book though it didn't cause me to delve deeper into the chick lit world at all.
So, considering that 2010 is the year that I read anything & it's the year that I've officially started reading romance novels, I felt it was high time for a reread. The basic plot of the novel is that two sisters differing from each other in almost every way aside from their taste in shoes (oh come on, you know it had to relate somehow to the title) both deal with crises in their lives & are deeply affected by a tragedy in their childhood. Maggie is the younger sister, drop dead gorgeous, unstable, & dyslexic while Rose is older, wiser, smarter, & a successful lawyer at a top firm in Philadelphia. There is sibling rivalry, & a betrayal, each character is faced to deal with their own vulnerabilities that have been growing inside them since they were young.
This is a novel more about healing & the importance of family connections. Also, it's about how you can't cover up the past, you can't pretend it didn't happen no matter how unpleasant it is. `In Her Shoes' will make you laugh at times, cry a little, & make you wonder if you're in the right place in your life or not.
Weiner treats her characters with sensitivity and compassion, and her writing is engaging and makes you want to read the book to the end in one sitting.
