The author's previous work as a National Park Ranger helps her to set some great mysteries in many of the National Parks. This book was chosen as one of our librariy's Mystery Book Club choices.. This book was set in Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico...But rather than the section traveled by the general public it's set in the larger section that wasn't discovered until the 80's. Even today, only the most expert in caving travel through. The author uses this setting to create a very intriguing murder plot, that twists and turns, not allowing you to put the book down till you know the answer. It sold me on the author and I've bought others in the series.

Blind Descent Anna Pigeon Mysteries Nevada Barr 9780380728268 Books Reviews

This is another Anna Pigeon character book. Anna is called to Carlsbad Caverns ( fondly known as CACA) as a coworker of hers has had an accident deep in Lechuguilla, a cavern not open to the public and not totally explored. She suspects the woman's injury was not an accident and the entire expedition team become suspects to her.
The story was quite 'real' to me as I had a recent vacation to Carlsvad Cavens. Lechuguilla was mentioned several times by the rangers. At the time the book was written (90's), 90 MILES had been discovered. As if Nov. 2013, they reported 100 miles as the length if Lechuguilla. It is a cavern system requiring rappelling down cliff faces, swimming across a cave lake, as well as crawling in little holes. It doesn't even house bats.
The story is well written and a great Anna Pigeon "who done it."
I have a moderate fear of heights and periodically suffer from claustrophobia, which is an evil combination for reading Nevada Barr's Blind Descent. Following Anna Pigeon's journey of discovery took me through ridiculous bouts of feeling like I was in suffering right along with her ... and I loved it! While there are moments of thinking I've figured out the whodunnit, the penny doesn't drop for me until exactly when Barr wants the big reveal. Looking forward to continuing to catch up on the series.
I'm too lazy to review every Anna Pigeon Mystery, because when I finish one book, I'm right on to the next one. I've enjoyed them all, but Blind Descent is one of the best.

I am, and have always been, a non-fiction reader of history and adventure; reading novels only occasionally, and mysteries, never. Until now. Nevada Barr has a sharp eye for detail in nature; a good ear for the way people really interact; and a sly understanding of how things work in a federal resource protection agency. The settings, the situations, and the governmental agency details all ring true. Having worked as a woman in a resource protection agency myself, I recognize the details in the workaday world of Anna Pigeon.

I am unembarrassed to admit I love Anna Pigeon. Anna knows how to do s**t, she's not afraid of the dark, she has a charming irreverent streak, she tries new things even when she is afraid, she asks great questions in interviews, she pitches it right back when people make idiotic comments, and she sleeps naked! Anna Pigeon takes transfers to work in National Parks in many different parts of the US, but her heart is really in the desert. Someday she'll make it back there.

In Blind Descent, Anna finds herself in the confines of a cavern system, facing her fears of being trapped deep underground with no fast way out. It wasn't her choice to be in this situation, but ever the trouper, she immerses herself in her new reality. As in the other mysteries, there is a death and a puzzle to solve.

It's not even about the mysteries, for me. I just love learning what is next for Anna.
NO SPOILER HERE! I will not give you a “Reader’s Digest” condensed version of this book.
Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series is an exceptional creation. It is unique in that each one of the books is set in a different National Park, though there are some doubles. Ms. Barr’s descriptions of the park, the inner workings of the National Park System, history, environment, flora, fauna and applicable issues make reading these mysteries a fulfilling adventure. Like many such series, it will serve the reader well to read them in order. This isn’t necessary as each mystery will stand alone quite well. But Anna’s personal story is the thread that makes the series complete. Anna herself is a masterful creation. Human, flawed, introspective, complex, she is the window through which the reader sees much of the beauty our National Park System has to offer. From Mesa Verde, the Florida Keys, Lake Superior to environments that are dry, wet, cold, and hot, the drastically changing settings and Anna’s evolving personal life keep this series fresh and engaging. It will be no surprise to the reader that Ms. Barr is a former Park Ranger. I’ll admit I haven’t read the last three books in the series – with good reason. They are my emergency kit. When I have waded through a piece of substandard literary junk and need a dose of quality writing, an Anna Pigeon mystery is a perfect fix. If you have ever done any cave exploring on your own, not the commercial variety, you will relate to this mystery.
