LOYAL A Leader Guide to Winning Customer and Employee Loyalty Aaron Painter 9781619617513 Books
Managers and team leaders seeking to understand the importance of employee engagement and loyalty, and a myriad of practical and insightful ideas for generating a strong and effective culture, would benefit most from this book. In a style similar to Thomas Friedman—wide ranging anecdotes connecting cultural and technology trends—Aaron Painter drives home an important idea. Fiercer and faster competition in markets that have now matured—more blue oceans are maturing into highly competitive red oceans—are forcing companies to strengthen customer loyalty. The most effective way to do that is through employee loyalty, which is built through leadership, culture-building, and most importantly, a listening organization.New data-driven enterprise tools enable such listening to scale for larger or multi-national organizations that want to form strong relationships like that of a local family run business, and the authors experience at Microsoft is illustrative. The idea that developing loyalty and caring about employee engagement is an important competitive advantage is well understood by some of the most valuable and successful companies, including Amazon, Google, Xiaomi, Starbucks, Alcoa, Warby Parker, and others discussed here.
Managers who switch their orientation to really listen to employees and customers could dramatically change their teams daily work experience to reignite passion and creativity. With that comes higher productivity, process improvements, and product innovation. If you understand this, the book offers dozens of ideas to try within your team. If you don’t, the book explains why loyalty and culture is so important and the impact good leadership can have. Ultimately, it is a shift in mindset—and managers who adopt it are much more likely to succeed and be fulfilled professionally.
Scattered throughout are insights about global trends. Repeat customer usage driven by software has become more important than hardware; driving customer lifetime value is more important than a one time sale. Cheap labor in China is on the decline, with a myriad of consequences. Data is the fuel driving the fourth industrial revolution. China is going to begin to lead in technology innovation and create new global services, not just be a fast follower and a manufacturer.
I recommend the book to managers and leaders seeking to catalyze employee engagement to drive growth, creativity to spark product or process innovation, and a sense of ownership that empowers continuous improvement within their teams and organizations.

LOYAL A Leader Guide to Winning Customer and Employee Loyalty Aaron Painter 9781619617513 Books Reviews
Aaron Painter's book Loyal relates the author's views and lessons learned from his experience as a globe-trotting Microsoft manager where he worked with workers in several countries and cultures.
Perhaps the most controversial chapter of Painter's book is one where he makes the case for listening to workers. In an era where executives who order up an annual Gallup survey of their personnel are considered ahead of their peers, Aaron Painter goes far outside of the mainstream by advocating that managers take the time to develop the ability to "listen" to workers' body language. At a time when global business (and American business in particular) give much lip-service to the value of workers while actually building low-investment, high-turnover HR models, Painter call on corporations to emulate the longer-term thinking found in family businesses (in Asia, in particular).
Perhaps a future sequel could explore the structural reasons and incentives that the authors has seen in play in other business organizations or within Microsoft, itself, that apparently compel corporations to treat their workers less loyally - and what some possible practical strategies might be to change these dynamics.
All in all, a compelling read.
In my seven years as a consultant with McKinsey&Company I have read and seen a lot - and yet, I find LOYAL an incredibly eye-opening account of a key topic in today's business world customer and employee attraction. The author has many practical anecdotes from around the world that sum of to a number of key themes such as employee motivation, retention of talent, long-term assets that drive results, etc. With ever more data, easier 24/7 communication, and the rapid pace of business - LOYAL gives some useful examples how to inspire TRUE loyalty in ones employees, team members and customers. Definitely a MUST READ!
LOYAL teaches you how to more successfully work in the always-connected Internet era. It takes the familiar story lines of “loyalty is dead’ and “millennials have no allegiance” and turns them on their head. The author shares techniques to listen more effectively at-scale and illustrates the core learning of how the skillsets and tools to listen to employees and customers are the same. LOYAL shows you how to amplify your leadership potential many fold through establishing the learning and listening cycle for your critical constituents!
Painter shows us the profound upside of listening and uses real-world examples to illuminate his vision, thus providing conceptual as well as example based learning. The author draws on his experiences at Microsoft running teams around the world to exemplify the opportunity of soliciting and incorporating feedback into the process of running a business. Using technology to better connect is a theme that runs through the whole book, and the author’s broad technology leadership background makes him uniquely qualified to advise in this area.
The examples that draw on the author’s lessons learned in China presage the speed and style of work that the rest of the world will experience. This gives readers a rare view into the future and is useful to help build new skills that we all will need in an ever-globalizing workplace.
LOYAL’s lessons not only have helped me to build stronger relationships, but also to see every experience with a customer as rife with potential feedback and learning. Once you read this book you will look to understand how you can create feedback loops from every customer interaction and you will work harder to empower your workforce to do the same. Done well, this results in a new manner of work – a listening organization where idea generation and relationships become the key to delivering greater growth and sustained competitive advantage. These yield invaluable lessons for any business. Read LOYAL if you want to better hone your leadership and business management skills!
